When to Mow Your Lawn in Houston
A month-by-month schedule for St. Augustine and Bermuda lawns in the Houston metro.
Houston's growing season is one of the longest in the country — almost nine months of active turf growth. Mow at the wrong height or skip too many weeks and you'll end up with scalped, weed-prone turf. Here's the schedule we follow for our weekly Houston, Sugar Land, Katy and Pearland lawn care customers.
Houston Mowing Schedule by Month
| Months | Frequency | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| January – February | Skip or 1×/month | Lawn is dormant. Only mow if winter weeds get tall. |
| March | Every 10–14 days | First scalp mow once nights stay above 50°F. Bag clippings. |
| April – May | Every 7–10 days | Growth ramps fast. St. Augustine wants 3.5–4″, Bermuda 1–2″. |
| June – August | Every 5–7 days | Peak growth + heat. Mow tall, never cut more than 1/3 the blade. |
| September – October | Every 7–10 days | Slowing down. Keep height up to shade out fall weeds. |
| November | Every 2–3 weeks | Last full mow before dormancy. Mulch leaves into the lawn. |
| December | As needed | Usually done. Cleanup pass if leaves pile up. |
What Mowing Height Should I Use?
- St. Augustine (most common in Houston): 3.5″ to 4″ in summer. Keep it tall — it shades out weeds and survives drought stress.
- Bermuda: 1″ to 2″. Loves being cut short. Mow more often.
- Zoysia: 1.5″ to 2.5″. Slow growing, needs less frequency.
Common Mistakes Houston Homeowners Make
- Cutting too short. Below 3″ on St. Augustine invites weeds and fungus.
- Mowing wet grass after a storm. Tears the blade, clumps clippings, and spreads disease.
- Skipping July–August weeks. Growth doesn't stop in summer here. Miss two weeks and you're scalping it back.
- Dull blades. Sharpen every 20–25 hours of use. Dull blades shred grass tips brown.
When Should I Hire a Lawn Care Service?
If your yard is over 5,000 sq ft, if you travel during summer, or if you don't want to deal with hauling a mower in 95° humidity — a weekly service usually pays for itself in time saved. Most Houston-area lawns run $45–$85 per visit for mow, edge, line-trim and blow-off.
